Video sites

Video sites are featuring more in my classes. This is due to a timetabled session in an IT suite. We are able to use listening sites and video. It's interesting to wee which students like using video sites. They turn on their machines and plug in the headphones. Within minutes Jose is logged onto a music video site and is singing the words out of tune. “At least it is in English”, I reassure myself. Pavel is watching a short film which has been sent him from his country. He calls me over to watch it with him. I am drawn to it, but know I must attend to the class. He is immersed in it. He keeps playing the film over and over again. It seems he is day dreaming, but at the same time attached to the screen by an invisible cord.

Problems and advice

We are going to practice some writing today on health and giving advice.

Activity A
_ Talk about home remedies
Do you always take medicine when you are ill? What do you do if you have an
insect sting, a cough, a sore throat or a headache? Are there any home remedies
that you use? Tell other learners what you do.

Activity B _ Write about home remedies
Write an article of about 160 words about a home remedy that is used in your
country. Word-process the article if you can.

Activity C
_ Read advertisements for health products on the internet
Look through a variety of pages and find advertisements for health products.
Which advertisements are the most effective and why?
Discuss your ideas with a partner.

Read the two problems and write an answer to one of them (120 words)

Problem 1

I have done something really stupid. It's our wedding anniversary soon and I wanted to buy my wife something really special. I borrowed money to pay for my present and now I am having trouble paying it back. I have taken on extra hours at work and my wife wonders why we are not better off financially because of it. I'm sure she thinks I am having an affair. I can't tell her what I have done. Have you got any advice?

Problem 2

I am 25 and have been married for five years. I thought I loved my husband but I've just started a new job and my new boss has made it obvious he fancies me. He is 45 but is very attractive. Should I give in and have an affair? I'm sure my husband would never suspect as he is too engrossed in his own work. What advice can you give?
